Facts about Karumba

Karumba is a small town situated at the mouth of the Norman River in the Gulf of Carpentaria, it is known for rich prawning and fishing grounds, each season prawn trawlers from all over Australia come to Karumba to start trawling for Banana prawns in the Gulf waters and professional fishermen and their families come to try their luck fishing for Barramundi and King Salmon. Prawning, Fishing and Live Cattle Export is Karumba's main industry and it has also become popular as a tourist location. Thousands of caravans converge on the town from March to September when the climate is cool and the Morning Glory clouds come rolling in from the sea, and although still a small town Karumba can provide all the facilities to make the visitors welcome: Caravan Parks, Fishing Charters and River Cruises, Hotel, Tavern, Accommodations, Swimming Pool, Golf Courses, Supermarkets, Café and Bakery plus a Taxi Service, Post Office, Library and Visitors Information Centre, Barramundi Discovery Centre, Medical Clinic and School.
